Orthodontic Foundation Programme
This is a modular training scheme that equips general dentists with expertise in the field of Orthodontics and allows students to pursue a flexible training pathway that can be taken over a period suited to individual requirements and circumstances.
The course provides tuition from experts in the field of Orthodontics together with advanced clinical training so that students are able to develop sufficient proficiency in Orthodontics to be able to handle simple to moderate cases immediately on completion of the three month programme.
The course will prepare and enable General Dental Practitioners to meet the needs and demands of patients with malocclusions, and will increase and enhance knowledge and understanding of Orthodontics. It offers a complete introduction to whole patient care, including the processes of orthodontic examination, diagnosis, assessment, investigations and the management of patients with malocclusions. The programme is organised into a series of three modules, each of a month’s duration.
Module One
During the first month the principles of Orthodontic treatment will be covered and a range of orthodontic treatments including Invisalign, the Inman Aligner as well as conventional fixed brace treatment is explained. This introduction gives an overview of treatment philosophy, bracket positioning, archwire type, case selection and treatment planning. The module is structured so that it demands of students an appreciation of a patient’s anatomical, physiological, physical and psychological responses to treatment.
Module Two
The module combines academic study with hands on workshops designed to develop clinical skills and techniques together with theoretical approaches to orthodontics. Typhodont and hands-on training during the course will teach aspects of orthodontic treatment from case evaluation to fitting and then retention. On completion of module 2 dentists will be able to fit and understand the mechanics of fixed appliances.
Module Three
This module is focused on the study of multidisciplinary treatment and force systems. It will educate students in the identification and treatment planning for advanced multidisciplinary cases. The module aims to develop understanding of occlusal principles, and the ability to relate these to restorative plans in conjunction with restorative dentistry. Students will have the opportunity to learn some practical tips and skills.
