ORE Part 2: Training Programme
This section of the training programme comprises of two modules which cover the four components to Part 2 of the ORE:
Module 1
This one month long module prepares candidates for the first two components of Part 2.
1. An operative test on a dental manikin. Students are trained to perform a number of operative procedures on various teeth in different areas of the mouth on a dental manikin. These procedures will involve the preparation and restoration of teeth and is designed to develop operative skills.
2. An Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE): Students receive training in what is expected during the OSCE designed to test clinical skills. These may include history-taking and assessment, communication skills, decision making, ethics and clinical examination.
Module 2
This one month long module prepares candidates for the last two components to Part 2:
3. A diagnostic and treatment planning exercise: This section of the module is designed to expand communication skills and overall professionalism. Students will be trained to take patient histories, together with relevant additional information such as photographs, radiographs and formulate appropriate treatment plans. Training will focus on developing good clinical judgement in the justification of the choice of treatment proposed.
4. A practical examination in medical emergencies: This section aims to teach the skills necessary to manage an adult or child who becomes acutely unwell in dental practice.
