Dr. Ian Lane (Partner) BDS (Hons), MFGDP, Dip SED, MSc ImplantIan qualified with an Honours degree from Newcastle University in 1998. Following two years of extended training at Newcastle Dental Hospital, Ian was awarded the MFGDP qualification in 2001 and this was followed by the Diploma in Conscious Sedation in 2002. Ian has always been interested in delivering high standards of NHS and Private dentistry for adults and children.
In more recent years, he has developed greater understanding and skills in managing complex cases and is about to embark on an extended training programme with Dr John Kois in Seattle. He will be one of only a few UK dentists to embark on this cutting edge program, allowing his dental care to be delivered in the most contemporary, evidence based manner for the most challenging of dental patients.
Ian also has an interest in implant and reconstructive dentistry and has been very active in postgraduate education in this field, recently having started lecturing for a leading implant company - Nobel Biocare.
Ian has shown continued commitment to further education with his three year MSc implant programme at Warwick University, where he was awarded “best implant student in 2008.” This implant training led to Ian being awarded regional tutor status for Warwick University and the GIFT Implant training Institute.
Ian is keen to provide whole patient care where dentistry is delivered in a conservative and minimally invasive manner. In the last 2 years Ian has attended a one year restorative course with Paul Tipton in Manchester, a surgical implant course at Paris Medical School and a guided surgery residency with Paulo Malo in Lisbon, Portugal.
He has also attended various scientific meetings in the UK and in Gothenburg, Sweden. Ian has been a partner at Queensway since 2006 and has been involved in university research projects in implant care and conscious sedation.
Dr. Paul Averley (Partner) BDS, DGDP(UK)RCS, Dip SED, MPhil, PhD, MSc ImplantPaul qualified from Newcastle-upon-Tyne University, School of Dental Sciences in 1990. Following his vocational training, Paul has been involved for many years with innovating, leading and delivering services in primary care at Queensway Dental Clinic.
In 1995 Paul completed his extended training in conscious sedation at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. By 1997 he had completed his diploma in conscious sedation. Additionally, in 1997, Paul obtained the Royal College of Surgeons’ Faculty of General Dental Practitioners’ Diploma in General Dental Practice. Since 1997, Paul has been involved in establishing conscious sedation services in primary care to reduce dependency on hospital based general anaesthesia.
This involvement led him to develop the evidence base for new conscious sedation techniques resulting in his achieving a Master of Philosophy in 2003 followed by a Doctorate of Philosophy in 2005 from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Following his PhD, Paul was invited to become a visiting academic for the University where he regularly contributes to the training of postgraduates in the Diploma and Conscious Sedation. Most recently, in 2008, Paul completed his extended training in implant dentistry at the University of Warwick Medical School where he gained Master of Science in implant dentistry. In 2009 Paul was invited to become a regional tutor of implant dentistry for the University of Warwick.
As a result of his pioneering primary care based research in paediatric conscious sedation, Paul has been involved with drawing up national guidance on conscious sedation, working with the Standing Dental Advisory Committee on Conscious Sedation producing guidelines for “Standards for Conscious Sedation in Dentistry- A report from the Standing Committee on Dental Sedation, alternative techniques 2007”. Most recently, in 2010 Paul has been involved with a national guidance development group for the NICE producing guidelines for the use of sedation in children for therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
Since 2004, Paul has been a Trustee and Board Member of the Society for the Advancement of anaesthesia in Dentistry (SAAD). This Society is the second largest dental Society in the UK and is at the forefront of sedation. Through this involvement Paul has been instrumental in the development of a “Safe Sedation Practice Scheme” which benchmarks sedation practice through an inspection based quality assurance programme. This scheme is currently being rolled out in the UK. Since 2011 Paul has been involved in a SAAD working group to fund a paediatric based conscious sedation PhD. In addition Paul is a member of the SAAD editorial Board for the Journal of Conscious Sedation.
